The Last Gig of the Summer
Hopkinton Parks, Chichester Old Homes Day, Backyard Gatherings, Eagle Square and more . . .

Thunder storms, heat, bugs, sweat, small and large crowds -
they have seen it all and look back at a great summer.

On Friday, August 31, the River Band started its final summer session. They filled the place with melody, rhythm and glorious words. The evening was young and beautiful. A small crowd had gathered and warmed itself in Eagle Square's perfect atmosphere.
In the sky overhead something was happening though,
forboding of what was soon coming.
A beautiful and perfect rainbow settled in the sky.
Soon a colorful sky turned into a cloudy one and clouds turned into rain. Other times the band had used a professional canopy to stay dry and protect their precious instruments. Tonight however there was no cover. Eagle Square slowly changed. Was it the River Band who had magical power? What an incredible influence they seem to have ... the whole place started to transform into a river.
When the rain got heavier and the river grew, most members of the band capitulated and reached out for the tarps. Not so for the River Band's drummer boy. He was there for another outreach and played on.
Dick kept on beating those precious barrels. Was he mimicking the rhythm of the rain? Whatever he did, he sure put his soul in it! After about twenty minutes he ended with a loud and splashing finale. The crowd was gone, the others stared at him from underneath the blue tarp. Thanks Dick - in a very appropriate way you said goodbye to a good summer . . .
